Home Remedies to Control a Common Cold

Being sick is not something that anyone likes. Even if you are at home laying around, the chills, fever, body aches, coughing, runny or stuffy nose will keep you feeling miserable. But there are plenty of home remedies that you can use that will help ease your cold symptoms.

Cold Remedies

Chicken Noodle Soup

Something we have heard from the time we were little is to eat chicken noodle soup when we are sick. Not only is it a comfort food, but research has shown that eating chicken noodle soup can help slow down neutrophils in the body. Neutrophils are white blood cells that help protect your body from infection. When neutrophils move slowly, they are given more time to work on healing the parts of the body that need it the most. The broth from the soup can also help keep you hydrated.

Honey has properties that are both antimicrobial and antibiotic. You can ease the pain of a sore throat by drinking lemon tea with some honey in it. Research has shown that it is a natural cough suppressant as well. If you take a tablespoon of it before bed, you will likely sleep much better since you will not wake up coughing.

Drinking hot tea will help to reduce the pain of a sore throat. It will also help loosen mucus, which will reduce nasal congestion. When we are not feeling well, we often do not drink as much as we should, but this will help to ensure that we get the fluids we need and stay hydrated.

Garlic is another item that has antimicrobial properties because it contains allicin. The severity of your cold will decrease as well as the length of your cold being shortened when you take a garlic supplement. It is also believed that taking this supplement on a regular basis will help to reduce the risk of getting a cold in the first place.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C plays an important part in the overall health of your body and has many benefits. There are many foods that contain it, such as oranges, limes, grapefruits, lemons, and other green leafy vegetables. Drinking orange juice or lemonade can help to reduce the amount of phlegm during a cold.

Drinking these things will probably not completely take your cold away, but the extra vitamin C can be helpful in shortening the length of time you have a cold. It will also help to give your overall health a little boost.

Salt Water

Gargling with salt water can help reduce the severity of a cold and can help to prevent you from getting an upper respiratory infection. The pain from a sore throat can be soothed by gargling salt water. Nasal congestion can also be reduced. When gargling salt water, the amount of mucus can be reduced and also loosened, so you will not be as congested.

Vapor Rub

Using vapor rub reduces the amount of time someone is sick as well as reducing the symptoms. Putting vapor rub on your chest before you go to sleep will help reduce the congestion and coughing, allowing you to sleep better.

Having a cold is not something that anyone wants. But when you use these home remedies, you will feel better faster and your symptoms you feel with your cold will be reduced.
